Dropped kerbs in Littlehampton: arrange access before surfacing
Plan driveway access and check the West Sussex vehicle crossover process before booking private driveway work.

The driveway and the pavement are different responsibilities
Surfacing your private land does not give you permission to alter the public footway or drive across it without an authorised vehicle crossover. If your Littlehampton project creates or changes vehicle access, check the highway authority’s requirements before agreeing an installation sequence.
Check approval, layout and contractor requirements
West Sussex County Council publishes guidance for dropped kerbs and vehicle crossovers. Consult that guidance for the current application process and any separate planning checks. The position of street furniture, trees and the available parking space may affect the proposal, so avoid assuming approval before the application is assessed. Tell your driveway contractor about the access application and proposed levels. Coordinating the crossing with the private driveway reduces the risk of having a new finish that needs alteration to meet the approved access.
Your project checklist
- Check whether an existing crossover is authorised and suitable.
- Read the current county council application guidance.
- Coordinate private driveway levels with the proposed crossing.
Can my driveway installer simply lower the kerb?
Not without the required authority and permissions. Agree the highway approval process before any work on the public footway.
