Follow the water during rainfall

Look at your driveway during or just after rain. Photograph standing water near the garage, pavement and entrance. A dry-day survey can miss the places where runoff gathers. Tell your installer about water entering adjacent paths or reaching a neighbour’s boundary, rather than treating those symptoms as cosmetic defects.

Permeable surfacing is a whole-system decision

A permeable finish does not make an impermeable base disappear. Ask how water passes through the layers, what happens during heavy rain and whether infiltration into the ground is suitable. Alternatively, an impermeable driveway may be designed to direct water to an appropriate permeable area. Front-garden planning rules and any separate access restrictions should be checked before work. The drainage design should be explained in the quote, not left until surfacing day.

Your project checklist

  • Mark existing gullies, channels and low points on a sketch.
  • Ask where runoff will go without affecting neighbours.
  • Request an explanation of the base and drainage layers.

Can a channel drain solve every puddle?

Not by itself. It needs suitable falls and a lawful, workable discharge route. The overall drainage arrangement matters.
